Fantastic 4

‘Fantastic 4’,

Films located in Tooting.

1.SNATCH (2000, Dir. Guy Richie)

Set in London’s criminal underworld a seemingly varied group of unprincipled boxing promoters, bookmakers with a violent streak, a Russian gangster, amateur criminals and ‘Jewelers’ fight to track down a priceless diamond. With some big names in the ensemble cast, Snatch has to some become a classic within the British Crime genre.

What some people might not realize is that Brad Pitt actually filmed some of the films most eye catching scenes in Tooting Bec Lido. With this film having the biggest budget (by along way) on this list, it is impressive to think that Tooting has what it takes to impress Hollywood.  Lets just hope the water was a bit warmer then it is currently.

2.COLIN (2008, Dir. Marc Price)

This film lends itself to a very different genre. Sticking with the theme of a realistic, somewhat morally questionable London aesthetic. However it explores the horror genre in an unusual and unexpected setting. Taking the classic zombie story but flipping on its head to be told from the point of view of those infected. Colin is the films central character and the narrative follows him through the streets as he makes his way amidst the carnage and chaos of an apocalyptic setting.

Rumored to have a budget of just £45, this film uses friends as extras, local shooting locations, and is shot primarily through point of view shoots with hand held camera work. Lending itself to a smaller budget film. The streets and aesthetic that Tooting provides create a more unpolished and chaotic location for this story to be told and by all accounts has done a fantastic job in presenting a fresh take on the classic zombie film.

3.THE WAY OF THE MONKEY’S CLAW(2012, Dir. John Bowens)

From the makers of ‘COLIN’ this film continues to push narrative boundaries and presents a somewhat unique and ambitious narrative. Following the pub goers and locals of tooting, who become part of a lethal scheme. A group of ‘ninjas’ are in search of a mysterious scroll, struck with a deadly poison. The survivors must work together to save themselves before it is too late.

Using the Antelope, a Tooting based pub (which might I add has a fantastic beer garden) as setting for the energetic and fast paced action comedy. Reminiscent of Shaun of the dead, the film uses a classic British pub and makes it a place of violently comedic story telling.

4.COMMON PEOPLE(2013, Dir. Stewart Alexander, Kelly Skinner)

This film takes a leap away from the violent, inherently dark nature of the genres already discussed and provides a sweeter lighter atmosphere. Common People tells the stories of multiple characters who all find themselves for their own reason in the open spaces of London, allowing Tooting Bec common to be the backdrop for the majority of this film.

This classically British film combines a playful and colorful charm, with elements of relatable relationships and situation in a saccharine canopied comedic way that leaves you with smile on your face. It has all the appeal of a smaller budget film however has been polished to create a higher budget feel.
